postheadericon Slow Computer Problems and Solutions

A computer running slow is always a sign of the computer not having enough resources to perform the tasks required.

This can be caused by a number of issues such as:

  • Not enough memory (RAM)
    • Memory is the quickest fix to slow computer problems. Windows XP should have at least 1GB of memory and Windows Vista or 7 should have at least 2GB of memory. You can check this by looking at the properties under My Computer in Windows XP or Computer in Windows Vista or 7.
  • Older Operating System
    • Windows XP and older operating systems run fast at first, but over time will experience a slowdown. Better memory management and maintenance has been built into Windows 7. An upgrade to Windows 7 will give you a performance increase and keep it that way. Contact us for discounted prices on Windows 7.
  • Malware, viruses and/or spyware
    • Malware (Malicious Software), spyware and viruses can cause poor computer performance. This is a large portion of computer problems so we have devoted a page just for it. Please see our Malware section for recommendations.
  • Bloat ware
    • Some programs require a lot of system resources such as some well known name brand security and accounting companies. Take a look in your programs list and remove any software you may not be using. You can find this under Control Panel>Add Remove Programs. Also  that equal or surpass the quality of the name brands. look at some of these free alternatives
  • Too many startup programs
    • When you install an application, more often than not, it will place itself into a startup mode when your computer starts. It will wait in memory so that if/when you use the application, it appears to start faster. When you get many of these programs doing this though, it adds up, uses resources and decreases your computer's performance. You need to clean up your startup folder and analyze your startup programs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Misconfigured settings
    • Sometimes settings can interfere with a computer's performance that a little tweaking to some misconfigured settings and something known as the registry. Take a look at our Recommendations page to find FREE software that can clean up these settings and the registry.
